The hostel of San Pietro a Montale is open all year round. As in every hostel on the pilgrimage routes, hospitality is given to pilgrims with a regular credential that certifies the departure date and destination. There are 6 beds. The rooms, restored a few years ago, are welcoming and functional. It is completely self-managed; each pilgrim must provide for his or her own food and can use the kitchen. A regulation establishes the rules of the stay.

San Pietro al Montale“, was a shelter for pilgrims (hospitale) who traveled on the Via Romea, or Francigena, with an attached church. Built south of the city of Piacenza, not far from the bridge over the Nure, along the ancient Via Emilia, founded around 1032 by a certain Rainerio, it was called “Hospitale dei Figli di Rainerio”. Having fallen into disrepair, it was refounded by the paratico dei Calzolai and, later, ceded to the Order of the Knights of Malta (1253). The “domus” and the church of S. Barnaba, located near the Nure river, were attached to it, with the task of maintaining the bridge over the river in good working order. In 1353, the hostel of San Pietro appears to have belonged to the Ospedale della Misericordia, in the city of Piacenza, also governed by the Order of Malta. The ancient small hospice continued its function of welcoming pilgrims, who passed along the Via Romea, until 1477, the year in which the more than 40 small hospitals existing in the city of Piacenza merged into the single Large Hospital, built in 1471. We are not able to reconstruct the architectural features of the ancient hostel of Montale. In the recent restoration of the church and the annexed house (1999), important finds were discovered, which attest to ancient structures, previously incorporated into an internal wall of the house, two brick semi-columns supporting a fragment of an arch were found.
The plaque, placed in the jubilee year 2000 in memory of the presence of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, attested from 1366, was placed by the Knights of Malta of Piacenza. The semi-columns with part of an arch extend from the floor on the ground floor to the ceiling of the first floor of the house. The columns can be dated between the 11th and 12th centuries. Fragments of decorations in the under-arch attest to the existence of an important building.
